SSSC Punjab Clerk Selection Process
The selection process consists of a Computer-Based Written Examination, a qualifying Computer Proficiency Test (CPT) and checking of original testimonials/interaction. Importantly, CPT marks are not added to the final merit. The final Select List is prepared on the basis of marks obtained in the written examination.
Written Examination
The written examination has a total of 100 marks and a duration of 2 hours.
| Section | Type | Details | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Knowledge | Objective | 50 questions × 1 mark | 50 |
| English Composition | Objective | 20 questions × 1 mark | 20 |
| English Composition | Subjective | Essay, Letter, Precis, Punjabi-to-English Translation | 30 |
| Total | 100 |
The subjective portion consists of an essay of 150 words for 10 marks, letter for 5 marks, precis for 5 marks and Punjabi-to-English translation for 10 marks.
Candidates must secure 33% in each subject and at least 40% aggregate in the written examination. There is a 1/4 mark deduction for every wrong answer in the objective portion. Unattempted questions receive neither credit nor discredit.
The subjective English Composition portion is evaluated only for candidates who obtain at least 33% marks in General Knowledge.
Computer Proficiency Test
Candidates shortlisted for the CPT must qualify both parts:
Part I: Spreadsheet Test
- 10 marks
- 10 minutes
- Minimum 4 marks required
Part II: English Typing Test
- Required speed: 30 words per minute
- Checked only after qualifying the spreadsheet test
- Typing speed is calculated using the prescribed formula based on words typed and mistakes.
CPT is qualifying only, so its marks do not contribute to the final merit. Certain PwBD candidates may seek exemption under the conditions and documentation specified in the notification.
Document Verification and Interaction
Candidates who qualify the written examination and CPT, in the numbers decided category-wise by the High Court, will be called for checking of original testimonials/interaction.
Final Merit
The final Select List is prepared strictly according to merit in the written examination. If candidates have equal marks, the older candidate is placed higher in merit. If their dates of birth are also identical, alphabetical order is used.
Answer Key, Objections and Normalization
After the written examination, SSSC will provide a provisional answer key on its official website. Candidates can submit objections by paying ₹25 per objection. Objections must be supported by appropriate reasons and documentary proof.
If the written examination is conducted in multiple shifts, marks in the objective portion will be normalized using the Standard Deviation Method specified in the recruitment notice.
Re-evaluation is not permitted. Candidates can request re-checking of an answer sheet within 30 days of declaration of the final result by paying the prescribed ₹500 per answer sheet, subject to the conditions in the notice.

CareerAlert24 Insight
This recruitment is particularly relevant for graduates who meet the Punjabi-at-Matriculation requirement and are comfortable with computer-based examinations. Candidates should not focus only on the 1,270 vacancy figure. The written test carries the marks that determine final merit, while the Computer Proficiency Test is qualifying.
A practical preparation plan should therefore give priority to General Knowledge and English Composition while also practising computer typing and spreadsheet operations. Candidates applying under Punjab reservation categories should also verify that their certificates are current and valid on the application closing date.
Another important point is the photograph requirement. Since the notification requires consistency between the real-time photograph, uploaded photograph and E-Admit Card photograph, candidates should take this requirement seriously when submitting the form.
